Part 1 · Interview

The place where you live

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

Could you tell me a little about yourself and where you live?

Sure. I'm twenty-six, and I work as a software developer. I live with my family in a quiet neighbourhood in the north of the city. In my free time, I like reading and going out with my friends. I really like my area, because it's calm and the people are friendly.

  • I live with my family in…a simple, natural way to start
  • In my free time, I like…talk about hobbies
  • I really like my area, because…give a reason, not just a fact

What are some of the nicest things about where you live?

The best thing is that it's very calm and clean. There are a few parks nearby, so I can go for a walk after work. On top of that, the people are really friendly, and we all know each other. And public transport is available around the clock, so getting around is easy.

  • The best thing is that…open with your main point
  • On top of that, …means "also, and this is even better"
  • available around the clockmeans available at any time, day or night
  • getting around is easymeans moving from place to place is easy

What would be the best way for me to get there?

The easiest way is by car. It takes about an hour from the city centre. Alternatively, you can take a bus, which is cheap and runs quite often. The fare is fixed, so you don't need to worry about extra charges.

  • The easiest way is…give a clear answer first
  • It takes about an hourtalk about travel time
  • Alternatively, …means "another option is…"
  • the farethe money you pay for a bus, train or taxi ticket

Should I go there at any special time of year?

I'd recommend going in spring. The weather is mild, and everything is green. Most tourists come in summer, but it gets quite crowded then. So in my opinion, spring is the best time, because it's quieter and more beautiful.

  • I'd recommend going in…after "recommend", use the -ing form
  • The weather is mildmeans not too hot and not too cold
  • it gets quite crowdedmeans there are too many people

Part 2 · Cue card

A problem that affects the environment where you live

You get 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1 to 2 minutes. Follow the four points on the card in order.

Candidate task card

Describe a problem that affects the environment in the area where you live.

You should say:

  • what the problem is
  • what causes it
  • what people feel about the problem
  • and explain what you think could be done to solve it

Start

I'd like to talk about a problem in my city, which is the loss of trees, or deforestation.

What the problem is

Ten years ago, our city had lots of trees along the roads and in the parks. Today, more than half of them are gone. In summer, the streets are much hotter, and the air feels dirtier than before.

What causes it

The main cause is fast urban growth. The city keeps building new offices and apartments, because more and more people are moving here for jobs. They also cut down old trees to make the roads wider.

How people feel

Most people are really unhappy about it. At first, nobody noticed. But when half the trees had disappeared, it was a real shock. Many of my neighbours feel that the city is losing its green heart in the name of modernisation.

How to solve it

In my opinion, the government should plant a ring of trees around the whole city. It could also give people small rewards, for example lower taxes, for planting trees in their gardens. People could even grow plants on their rooftops. If everyone does a little, the city can become green again.

  • I'd like to talk about…a clear first sentence for any cue card
  • The main cause is…introduce the reason
  • more and more peoplemeans the number keeps growing
  • it was a real shockmeans people were very surprised, in a bad way
  • in the name of modernisationmeans "with the excuse of making the city modern"
  • If everyone does a little, …a good way to finish with hope

Part 3 · Discussion

National problems and solving them

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

What do you think are the greatest problems your country is facing at present?

I think the biggest problems are slow economic growth and unemployment. Many young people finish university, but they can't find a good job. Healthcare is also a big issue, because it's quite expensive for ordinary people. For most families, these are the most burning issues right now.

  • I think the biggest problems are…give your answer in the first sentence
  • ordinary peoplemeans normal people, not rich or powerful
  • burning issuesmeans a very urgent and important problem

Do you think things are likely to get better or worse in the future?

I'm cautiously optimistic. The government is working on these problems, and we can see some signs of progress. However, political instability is a big obstacle. If leaders keep fighting for power instead of working together, things could get worse.

  • I'm cautiously optimisticmeans hopeful, but careful
  • signs of progressmeans small proof that things are improving
  • a big obstaclemeans something that blocks progress
  • instead of…compare two choices

And what has been done so far to solve these problems?

The government has taken several steps. For example, it has invested in the technology sector and made exporting easier for businesses. It has also opened training centres to teach new skills to people in rural areas. These are hopeful signs, but healthcare still needs much more investment.

  • has taken several stepsmeans has done several things to fix it
  • has invested in…means has put money into
  • rural areasmeans villages and the countryside
  • These are hopeful signs, but…show both sides in one sentence

How successful would you say these measures have been?

They've been successful to some extent, but progress is still slow. For instance, the country needs thousands of new hospitals, but only a few dozen have been built in the last three years. So there's still a long way to go.

  • to some extentmeans partly, but not completely
  • For instance, …same as "for example"
  • there's still a long way to gomeans much more work is needed

Is what you are going to study likely to be of any use to solve these problems?

Yes, I think so. I'm studying computer science, and technology can create a lot of jobs. After I graduate, I'd like to start a small software company. If it grows, it could hire many people and even bring money into the country from abroad. So it could help, directly or indirectly.

  • After I graduate, I'd like to…talk about future plans
  • If it grows, it could…talk about a possible result
  • directly or indirectlymeans in an obvious way or a hidden way

Should countries try to solve climate change problems together or individually? Why?

I strongly believe countries should work together. Climate change is a global problem, so no country can solve it alone. Rich countries have caused most of the pollution, so they have a bigger responsibility to lead. If world leaders don't cooperate, everyone will suffer, including future generations.

  • I strongly believe…a strong way to give your opinion
  • no country can solve it alonea clear reason in simple words
  • a bigger responsibilitymeans they should do more
  • future generationsmeans people who will live after us
