Part 1 · Interview

Your family and where you are from

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

Tell me something about your family.

Sure. I have a small family. I live with my parents and my younger sister. My father runs a small business, and my mother is a teacher. We're very close, and we usually have dinner together every evening.

  • I live with my parents and…a simple way to start

What do your brothers and sisters do?

I don't have any brothers, but I have one younger sister. She's a university student, and she's studying medicine. Besides her studies, she sometimes helps my mother with the housework. We get on really well.

  • helps my mother with the houseworkhelp someone with something
  • We get on really wellmeans we have a very good relationship

So, where are you from?

I'm from a small city in the north of the country. I was born and grew up there. Later, I moved to the capital for university, and I've lived here ever since.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of living there?

The biggest advantage is that it's safe and quiet. On top of that, shops and parks are nearby, and public transport is easy to find. The main disadvantage is that rent is quite high, and it goes up every year. Also, the roads are very busy at rush hour. But overall, I enjoy living there.

Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about a course called Business Communication. I took it at university, and it really helped me later in my job.

What it was

The course was about how people share information at work. For example, how to talk to your manager, to your colleagues and to customers.

When you took it

I took it in my third semester, in 2014, if I remember correctly. I had a great teacher, and I enjoyed it from the very first class. In fact, I got one of my highest grades in it.

What you learned

I learned how to write clear emails, how to give short presentations and how to listen carefully. I also learned what can go wrong when a company communicates badly.

Why you took it

I took this course because I wanted to improve my communication skills, both at work and in my personal life. Looking back, I'm really glad I took it.

  • I'd like to talk about…a clear first sentence for any cue card
  • if I remember correctlyuse it when you are not 100% sure

  • In fact, …use it to add a stronger fact
  • I learned how to…list two or three skills
  • Looking back, I'm really glad…a good way to finish: how you feel now

Part 3 · Discussion

Studying abroad and future plans

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

How do you think studying overseas will be different from studying in your own country?

I think it's very different. At home, you can live with your family and see your friends often. But abroad, you're on your own, and many students also need a part-time job. On the other hand, you can learn about a new culture, and the education is often better.

  • you're on your ownmeans you live alone, without help from your family
  • a part-time joba job for only some hours a week
  • On the other hand, …use it to show the other side

So what problems do you think you will have while studying abroad?

First, I'll miss my family a lot, especially in the first few weeks. Second, there's the language barrier, because people speak fast and have different accents. I might also feel lonely at the start, because I won't know anyone. But I'm a quick learner, so I hope it won't last long.

  • First, … Second, …an easy way to give a list
  • especially in the first few weeksespecially = more than at other times
  • the language barriermeans problems because you don't speak the language well
  • I'm a quick learnermeans I learn new things fast

Do you think you will have many difficulties adapting to a new culture?

I don't think so. Of course, it's a bit tough at the beginning, especially if the culture is very different. But I'll do my homework before I go. I'll read about the local customs, so nothing will be a big shock.

  • adapting tomeans get used to something new
  • it's a bit toughmeans it's a little difficult
  • do my homeworkhere it means prepare and learn about something before
  • the local customsthe usual habits and traditions of a place

Do you think that there will be any major changes in your field of study over the next few years?

Yes, definitely. I study computer science, and it changes very fast. New programming languages and tools appear all the time. For example, AI is changing the way we write software right now. So we need to keep learning.

  • Yes, definitely.a strong, clear start
  • all the timemeans very often
  • the way we…means how we do something
  • keep learningmeans continue to learn

How do you think an overseas degree will improve your professional skills?

I think it will help a lot. Good universities abroad have great teachers and modern facilities, so I can learn more. Also, in my country, employers really value a foreign degree. So it could open more doors for me in my career.

  • it will help a lota simple first answer
  • modern facilitiesfacilities = buildings, labs and equipment
  • employers really value…means companies think it is important
  • open more doorsmeans give more chances and opportunities

What do you intend to do once you have finished your studies?

I'll go back to my country and look for a good job. A job will help me use what I've learned and build more skills. Later, I'd like to start my own online business. That's my plan for now, but of course, plans can change.

  • look for a good joblook for = try to find
  • build more skillsmeans get better at more things
  • Later, I'd like to…talk about a plan for the future
  • That's my plan for now, but…a natural way to finish

What do you see yourself doing in ten years' time? And how do you see your personal life changing?

That's hard to say! But if everything goes to plan, I'll have my own online business by then. In my personal life, I'll probably be married, maybe with one or two children. So I'll have more responsibilities, but I hope I'll still have time for my friends.

  • That's hard to say!a natural way to start a difficult question
  • if everything goes to planmeans if everything happens the way I want
  • by thenmeans before that time
  • I'll probably…use it when you are not sure
