Start

I'd like to talk about Hormuz Island, a small island in the Persian Gulf. Most foreign tourists have never heard of it.

What the place is

It's a small island, only about forty square kilometres, in the south of my country. Around six thousand people live there, mostly fishermen and their families.

Have you been there

Yes, I went there last winter with two classmates for a university project. We stayed in a small guesthouse run by a local family.

What people can see there

The island is famous for its colourful soil. There are red, yellow and purple hills, and a beach where the sand is red. Local people even use the red soil as a spice in their food! There's also an old Portuguese castle and a beautiful valley called the Valley of the Statues, with strange rock shapes.

Why it is unknown

It's unknown mainly because it's far from the big cities, and you can only get there by boat. There are also very few hotels and almost no advertising. But I think that's part of its beauty. It still feels wild and real, and the people are very welcoming.

  • Most foreign tourists have never heard of itthey don't know it exists
  • a small guesthousea small, simple hotel
  • run by a local familymanaged by a family from there
