Part 1 · Interview

Money

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

When you go shopping, do you prefer to pay in cash or by card? Why?

I almost always pay by card or with my phone. It's quicker, and I don't need to carry a lot of cash. Also, I can check my bank app later to see exactly how much I've spent.

  • pay by carduse a bank card
  • carry a lot of cashhave much paper money with me
  • exactly how much I've spentthe exact amount of money I used

Do you ever save money to buy special things? Why?

Yes, I do. At the moment, I'm saving for a new camera, because photography is my hobby. Every month, I put a small amount of money into a separate account. It takes time, but it feels great when you finally buy it.

  • I'm saving for…keeping money to buy
  • a separate accounta different bank account
  • it feels great when you finally buy ita nice feeling at the end

Is it easy for you to save money? Why?

Not very easy. Prices are going up, and there's always something to pay for, like rent or bills. But I try to save a little every month, even if it's only ten percent of my salary.

  • Not very easy.a short answer
  • Prices are going upthings are getting more expensive
  • even if it's only…even a small amount

Should children get pocket money from their parents? Why?

Yes, I think a small amount is a good idea. Children learn how to manage money and make choices. If they spend it all on sweets, they learn a lesson. If they save, they can buy something bigger later.

Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about a discussion we had at work about working from home. It became quite a lively debate.

The subject

After the pandemic, our company had to decide whether to let us continue working from home some days, or return to the office every day.

Who was there

The discussion was in a team meeting with my manager and about eight colleagues. Our manager asked everyone to give their honest opinion.

What opinions were expressed

Some colleagues, especially those with children, wanted to work from home three days a week, because it saves time and helps with family life. Others, mostly younger people, preferred the office, because they missed their colleagues and found it hard to focus at home. My manager worried about teamwork.

Why it was interesting

I found it interesting because everyone had good reasons, and there was no single right answer. People listened to each other respectfully. In the end, we agreed on a mix: two days at home and three in the office. It showed me how a good discussion can find a solution that works for most people.

  • quite a lively debatean active discussion with different opinions
  • return to the officego back to working in the office
  • give their honest opinionsay what they really think
  • it saves timeyou don't lose time
  • no single right answerno one correct answer
  • a solution that works for most peoplean answer good for most

Part 3 · Discussion

Discussing problems and communication

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

Why is it good to discuss problems with other people?

Other people can give us new ideas and see things we don't see. Talking about a problem also makes us feel less stressed and less alone. Sometimes, just explaining the problem helps us understand it better.

  • see things we don't seenotice what we miss
  • less stressed and less alonecalmer and supported
  • just explaining the problemonly describing it

Is it better to talk to friends rather than family about problems?

It depends on the problem. For problems about relationships or school, many young people prefer friends, because they're the same age. For serious problems, like money or health, family is usually better, because they care about you deeply.

  • It depends on the problemdifferent problems need different people
  • the same ageof similar age
  • care about you deeplylove you very much

Is it always a good idea to tell lots of people about a problem?

No, not always. If too many people know, you might get too much different advice, and it becomes confusing. Also, some problems are private, and people might gossip. It's better to choose one or two people you trust.

  • No, not always.a careful no
  • gossiptalk about other people's private lives
  • people you trustpeople you believe are honest

Which communication skills are most important in meetings with colleagues?

Listening is the most important skill. You should let others finish and try to understand their point. It's also important to speak clearly and briefly, and to disagree politely, without making it personal.

  • let others finishdon't interrupt
  • speak clearly and brieflyspeak in a clear, short way
  • disagree politelysay you have another opinion in a nice way
  • without making it personalwithout attacking the person

What are the possible effects of poor written communication at work?

Poor writing can cause misunderstandings and mistakes. For example, an unclear email can make people do the wrong task. It can also make you look unprofessional to clients. And it wastes time, because people need to ask questions to understand.

  • misunderstandingstimes when people understand wrongly
  • look unprofessionalnot look serious about work
  • it wastes timeit uses time badly

How will technology affect communication at work in the future?

There will be more online meetings and messaging apps. AI will probably help us write emails and translate languages instantly. This will make international teams easier. But people may need to work harder to build real relationships with colleagues.

  • translate languages instantlychange words into another language immediately
  • international teamsteams with people from different countries
  • build real relationshipsmake true connections
