Part 1 · Interview
Childhood
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a small town near Mashhad, in the north-east of my country. We lived in a house with a big yard. When I was fourteen, my family moved to the city, because my father found a new job there.

Was it a good place to grow up?
Yes, it was a great place for a child. It was safe, so we could play outside without our parents worrying. Everybody knew each other. The only problem was that there weren't many things to do, like cinemas or sports clubs.

Candidate task card
Describe one of your friends whom you like.
You should say:
- who he or she is
- how you know him or her, and for how long
- why he or she is special to you
- and explain your relationship as friends
Start
I'd like to talk about my friend Leila. She's one of the kindest people I know.
Who she is
She's a nurse at a children's hospital. She's thirty, and she's married with a little daughter.
How you know her
We met at university about twelve years ago. We lived in the same student dormitory, and we became friends because we both loved cooking. We often cooked dinner together in the shared kitchen.
Why she is special
She's special to me because she's always there when I need her. A few years ago, when my father was in hospital, she visited us every day and helped us understand what the doctors were saying. I'll never forget that.
Your relationship
We're like sisters. We don't see each other as often as before, because we're both busy, but we talk on the phone every week. When we meet, we can talk for hours, and it feels like we were never apart.

Part 3 · Discussion
Friendship through life
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
Why do people have fewer friends when they grow up?
Adults are much busier. They have jobs, families and responsibilities, so they don't have much time to meet people. Also, friends move to different cities or countries. As we get older, we keep only a few close friends, the ones who really matter.
- Adults are much busiera main reason
- responsibilitiesduties, things you must do
- As we get older, …while age increases
- the ones who really matterthe important ones
What is important to keep a friendship going?
First, you need to stay in contact, even with a short message. Second, you need trust and honesty. And you should support each other in difficult times. A friendship is like a plant. If you don't take care of it, it slowly dies.
- keep a friendship goingmake it continue
- stay in contactkeep talking to each other
- support each otherhelp each other
- A friendship is like a plantmake a comparison
Is it important to have good friendships at work? Why?
Yes, I think it is. You spend eight hours a day at work, so it's much nicer if you like the people around you. Friends at work help each other and make difficult days easier. But it's also important to keep work and personal problems separate.

Is it easier to make friends now than in the past? Why?
In some ways, it's easier. You can meet people online who share your hobbies, from anywhere in the world. But in other ways, it's harder. People are busy and spend a lot of time on their phones, so they talk less to the people around them, like neighbours.
- In some ways, …partly
- But in other ways, …show the other side
- who share your hobbieswho like the same hobbies
- they talk less to…they don't talk as much
Are friends more important than family? Why?
For me, they're both important, but in different ways. Family is always there, no matter what happens. Friends are the people we choose. We can share our interests and secrets with them. In my opinion, a happy life needs both.

A good friend is someone you can trust completely. They don't share your secrets with others. They're also honest, even when the truth is difficult. And a good friend makes time for you, even when they're busy.
