Part 1 · Interview

Hobbies

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

Do you have a hobby?

Yes, my main hobby is photography. I take photos of streets, people and nature. I started with my phone, but last year I bought a second-hand camera. Now I go out every weekend to take pictures.

  • my main hobby is…say your most important hobby
  • a second-hand cameraa camera that someone used before
  • go out every weekend to…describe a habit

Why have you chosen this hobby?

I chose it because it makes me notice beautiful things in daily life. Before, I walked past interesting places without looking. Now I see the light, the colours and people's faces. It's also creative, and it helps me relax.

  • it makes me notice…it helps me see
  • walked pastwalked near without stopping
  • it helps me relaxit makes me calm

What are good hobbies, and what are bad hobbies?

Good hobbies are ones that keep your body or your mind active, like sports, reading or learning an instrument. Bad hobbies are ones that waste a lot of time or money, or are bad for your health, like playing video games all night or gambling.

  • keep your body or your mind activemake you move or think
  • waste a lot of timeuse time badly
  • gamblingplaying games for money

Did you have any hobbies as a child?

Yes, I loved drawing. I drew all the time, on paper, in my school books and sometimes on the walls! I also collected stamps from different countries. My grandfather gave me his old stamp collection, and I added to it.

Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about a shopping centre called Palladium. It's one of the most modern malls in my city.

Where it is

It's in the north of the city, in a quiet area near the mountains. It's easy to get to by car, and there's a big car park underneath.

Why you like it

I like it because it's clean, bright and never too crowded. The design is beautiful, with a lot of glass and plants. Even if I don't buy anything, it's a nice place to walk around and look at the shops.

How often you go

I go there about twice a month, usually on Friday afternoons with my friends. We walk around, have coffee and sometimes watch a film.

Its facilities

It has more than two hundred shops, from clothes to electronics. On the top floor, there's a food court with lots of restaurants, and there's also a cinema with six screens. There's even a play area for children, so it's popular with families too.

  • a big car park underneathunderneath = below it
  • never too crowdednever with too many people

Part 3 · Discussion

Shopping habits

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

How have people's shopping habits in your country changed over time?

In the past, people bought most things from small local shops and the bazaar. Now, many people go to big supermarkets and malls. And more and more people shop online, especially for clothes and electronics. People also pay by card or by phone, not with cash.

  • shopping habitsthe usual ways people shop
  • small local shopslittle shops near home
  • more and more peoplethe number keeps growing
  • not with cashnot with paper money

Why do some people buy things they don't need? Is this a bad trend?

Some people shop when they feel bored or sad, because it makes them feel better for a short time. Advertising and discounts also make people buy more. I think it's a bad trend, because it wastes money and creates a lot of rubbish.

  • feel bored or saddescribe feelings
  • for a short timenot for long
  • discountslower prices for a short time
  • creates a lot of rubbishmakes a lot of waste

Some people say women spend more time shopping than men. What do you think?

In my experience, it's often true, but not always. Many women enjoy looking around and comparing things. Many men just want to buy what they need and leave. But I know men who love shopping for clothes or gadgets too, so it really depends on the person.

  • In my experience, …from what I have seen
  • looking aroundlooking at many things
  • buy what they need and leaveshop quickly
  • it really depends on the personpeople are different

Some large malls are replacing traditional markets. Is this a good trend?

It's good in some ways, because malls are comfortable, clean and have parking. But I'd be sad if traditional markets disappeared. They're part of our culture and history, and small shop owners need them. I think we need both.

  • are replacingare taking the place of
  • It's good in some ways, because…accept part of the idea
  • I'd be sad if…an imaginary situation
  • I think we need botha balanced ending

Do young people in your country prefer large malls or small traditional markets?

Most young people prefer malls. They can shop, eat and watch a film in one place, and it's a nice place to meet friends. But some young people like traditional markets for special things, like handmade jewellery or vintage clothes.

  • in one placeall in the same building
  • a nice place to meet friendsa good place to be with friends
  • handmade jewelleryrings and necklaces made by hand
  • vintage clothesold clothes in a stylish way

What types of shopping centres are popular these days?

Big malls with entertainment are the most popular. People want more than shops. They want cinemas, restaurants, cafés and even indoor games. Malls have become places to spend a whole day, not just places to shop.

  • with entertainmentwith fun activities
  • People want more than shopsshops are not enough
  • places to spend a whole dayyou can stay all day
