Part 1 · Interview

Travel

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

Do you like travelling?

Yes, very much. I think travelling is the best way to learn. You meet new people and see how they live. Even a short weekend trip makes me feel refreshed and ready to work again.

  • the best way to learnthe most effective way

How do you usually travel?

Inside my country, I usually travel by bus. Long-distance buses are cheap and quite comfortable, with big seats. For very long trips, I sometimes fly. And when I travel with my family, we go by car.

  • Long-distance busesbuses for long trips between cities

What kind of places do you like to visit?

I like quiet places in nature, like villages in the mountains. I enjoy walking, breathing fresh air and talking to local people. I'm not a big fan of big tourist cities, because they're crowded and expensive.

Where do you plan to travel to in the future?

Ready 1:00

Start

I'd like to talk about Mr Hosseini, an old man who lives in my building. He's eighty-two, and I admire him a lot.

Who he is

He used to be a carpenter. He made furniture by hand for more than fifty years. Now he's retired, and he lives alone on the ground floor, because his wife passed away a few years ago.

How you met

I met him about four years ago, when I moved into the building. I was carrying heavy boxes, and he came out and offered to help, even though he was eighty years old! We've been friends since then.

What you like most

What I like most about him is his energy. He gets up at five every morning, walks for an hour and still makes small wooden toys for children in the neighbourhood. He's also very wise and funny. He always has a good story.

Why you admire him

I admire him because he's never bored or negative, even though he's old and lives alone. He says the secret of a happy life is to stay busy and help others. I hope I'll be like him when I'm his age.

Part 3 · Discussion

Retirement

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

What age do you think is normal for retirement?

I think around sixty-five is normal. People are healthier and live longer now, so many can work until that age. But it depends on the job. People with hard physical jobs, like builders, should be able to retire earlier.

  • retirementthe time when you stop working because of age
  • around sixty-fiveabout 65
  • it depends on the jobit changes with the type of work
  • physical jobsjobs that use the body a lot

What are the good things about being retired?

Retired people have a lot of free time. They can travel, start new hobbies and spend more time with their grandchildren. They also don't have the stress of work, like deadlines and difficult bosses. Many people say it's the time when they finally do what they love.

  • They also don't have the stress of…no pressure from
  • deadlinestimes when work must be finished
  • finally do what they loveat last do their favourite things

How does the government in your country treat retired people?

Retired people get a monthly pension, but for many of them, it isn't enough, because prices are high. They also get some health insurance. I think the government should do more, for example by giving them free public transport and cheaper medicine.

  • a monthly pensionmoney paid every month after you retire
  • it isn't enoughit's too little
  • health insurancehelp paying for doctors
  • should do moreshould help more

Can young specialists replace older workers who are retiring?

Partly. Young specialists often know new technology very well. But older workers have many years of experience, and that can't be learned from books. That's why companies should let older workers train young people before they retire.

  • Partly.only in some ways
  • know new technology very wellare good with new tools
  • can't be learned from booksneeds real practice
  • train young peopleteach young workers

Should people have the option to retire early? Why?

Yes, I think they should have the choice. Some people get tired or sick, and they need to stop. Others want to spend time with family or start a business. But early retirement usually means a smaller pension, so people should plan carefully.

  • have the choicebe able to decide
  • early retirementstopping work before the normal age
  • a smaller pensionless money after retiring
  • plan carefullythink well before deciding

What are the advantages and disadvantages of retiring from a job?

The main advantage is freedom. You can rest and do things you never had time for. But there are disadvantages too. Some people feel lonely or useless when they stop working, because they miss their colleagues and their daily routine. Money can also become a problem.

  • The main advantage is freedomthe biggest good point
  • things you never had time forthings you couldn't do before
  • feel lonely or uselessfeel alone or not needed
