Candidate task card
Describe something you bought that you had to save money for.
You should say:
- what it was
- how long you saved money for it
- how you saved the money
- and explain how you felt after you bought it
Start
I'd like to talk about my first laptop. I bought it when I was a university student, and I had to save money for a long time.
What it was
It was a silver laptop with a fast processor. I needed it for my studies, because I was studying computer engineering, and the computers in the university lab were always busy.
How long you saved
I saved money for about ten months. The laptop cost a lot of money for a student, and I didn't want to ask my parents, because they were already paying for my studies.
How you saved
I worked part-time in a bookshop at the weekends. I also gave private maths lessons to school students. I stopped buying snacks and eating out, and I put the money into a special bank account every month.
How you felt
When I finally bought it, I felt really proud. It was the first expensive thing I had bought with my own money. I took very good care of it, and I used it for five years. That experience taught me the value of money.
- I had to save moneyI needed to keep money for it
- a fast processorthe main part of a computer that makes it fast
- cost a lot of moneyit was expensive

Part 3 · Discussion
Children and money
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
Should children be taught to save money from a young age? Why?
Yes, definitely. If children learn to save when they're young, it becomes a habit. As adults, they'll manage their money better and avoid debt. It also teaches them patience, because they have to wait for the things they want.
- from a young agewhen they are small
- it becomes a habitthey do it naturally
- avoid debtnot owe money
- It also teaches them patiencethey learn to wait
What can parents do to teach children to save money?
Parents can give children a small amount of pocket money every week and help them save part of it. A money box is a simple idea for young kids. When children want something special, parents can help them save for it, instead of just buying it for them.
- pocket moneya small amount of money parents give children
- a money boxa small box for saving coins
- save for itkeep money to buy it
- instead of just buying itnot only buying it
Should parents buy everything their children ask for? Why?
No, I don't think so. If children get everything they want, they won't learn the value of things, and they may become spoiled. They also need to learn that you can't have everything in life. Parents should say no sometimes, and explain why.
- No, I don't think so.a clear no
- the value of thingshow important things are
- spoileda child who gets everything and behaves badly
- say no sometimesrefuse sometimes
What do young people in your country like to buy?
Young people love buying technology, like phones, headphones and gaming accessories. Fashion is also very popular, especially trainers and brand-name clothes. And many young people spend a lot of money in cafés with friends.

How do people pay for things they buy online?
Most people pay with a bank card through a secure payment page. In my country, people use local bank cards, because international cards don't work here. Some online shops also let you pay in cash when the product arrives.
- a secure payment pagea safe website page for paying
- local bank cardscards from banks in the country
- pay in cash when the product arrivespay at the door
Which is more important, the price of a product or its quality? Why?
For me, quality is more important. A cheap product that breaks quickly is a waste of money, because you have to buy it again. A good-quality product lasts longer, so it can be cheaper in the end. But of course, it depends on how much money you have.
- quality is more importanta clear opinion
- a waste of moneya bad use of money
- lasts longercan be used for a longer time
