Part 1 · Interview
Games
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
What games are popular in your country? Why?
Backgammon is very popular, especially among older people. You can see men playing it in parks and teahouses. Chess is also popular. Among young people, video games and mobile games are the most popular, because they're easy to play anywhere.

- especially among older peoplemostly with older people
- teahousestraditional cafés that serve tea
Do you play any games? Why?
Yes, I play chess on my phone almost every day. It's a good way to relax and to train my brain. I also play football video games with my friends at the weekend. It's fun, and we always laugh a lot.

How do people learn to play games in your country?
Most people learn board games from their family. For example, my grandfather taught me backgammon when I was eight. For video games, young people usually learn by watching videos online or by playing with friends.

Do you think it's important for people to play games? Why?
Yes, I think it is. Games help people relax and forget about stress. They also bring people together. Some games, like chess or puzzles, are good for the brain. But of course, playing too many video games can be a problem.

Part 2 · Cue card
An open-air or street market you enjoyed visiting
You get 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1 to 2 minutes. Follow the four points on the card in order.
Candidate task card
Describe an open-air or street market which you enjoyed visiting.
You should say:
- where the market is
- what the market sells
- how big the market is
- and explain why you enjoyed visiting this market
Start
I'd like to talk about the Friday market in my city. It's an open-air market, and it's one of my favourite places to spend a morning.
Where it is
It's held in a big car park near the city centre, but only on Friday mornings. During the week, it's just an empty car park, so it's amazing how it changes.
What it sells
It sells almost everything: fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, honey, local bread, second-hand books, old coins and hand-made crafts. Village farmers bring their own products, so the food is very fresh.
How big it is
It's quite big. There are about two hundred stalls, and it takes at least two hours to see everything. On busy days, thousands of people visit.
Why you enjoyed it
I enjoy it because it's full of life. People shout to sell their products, and you can try a little food before you buy. The prices are usually cheaper than in the shops, and you can bargain a little. I always come home with fresh food and a good feeling.

Part 3 · Discussion
Markets and shopping
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
Do people in your country enjoy going to open-air markets? Which type is most popular?
Yes, many people enjoy them, especially older people. Fruit and vegetable markets are the most popular, because the food is fresh and cheap. In big cities, there are also weekend markets for hand-made crafts and old things, which are popular with young people.

- fresh and cheapnew and not expensive
- popular with young peopleyoung people like them
What kinds of things are better to buy at markets? Why?
Fresh food is better at markets, like fruit, vegetables and herbs. You can see and smell them before you buy. Hand-made things are also good to buy at markets, because you can meet the person who made them.

Do young people feel the same about shopping at markets as older people? Why?
Not really. Older people often prefer markets, because they like talking to sellers and they trust fresh food. Many young people prefer supermarkets or online shopping, because it's faster and they can pay by card.
- Not really.a soft no
- they trust fresh foodthey believe it is better
- pay by carduse a bank card
What are the advantages of buying things from shops rather than markets?
Shops are open every day, and they have fixed prices, so you don't need to bargain. They're also more comfortable, with air conditioning in summer. And if a product has a problem, it's easier to return it to a shop.
- rather thaninstead of
- fixed pricesprices that don't change
- return it to a shoptake it back
How does advertising influence what people buy? Is this true for everyone?
Advertising makes products look exciting and necessary. It shows happy people using them, so we think we'll be happy too. It has a strong effect on children and young people. Older people are usually more careful, but nobody is completely free from it.

Have recent changes in the way people live affected shopping habits? Why?
Yes, a lot. People are busier now, so they shop less often but buy more each time. Online shopping has grown very quickly, especially since the pandemic. And because both parents often work, families buy more ready-made food.
