Part 1 · Interview
Dictionaries
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
Do you often use a dictionary?
Yes, almost every day, because I'm learning English. I don't use a paper dictionary anymore. I use a dictionary app on my phone, because it's fast and it also plays the pronunciation.
- I don't use … anymorenot now, but in the past
- a dictionary appa dictionary on the phone
- it also plays the pronunciationit says how a word sounds
What do you mostly use dictionaries for?
Mostly to check the meaning of new words when I read in English. I also use it to check how to pronounce words and how to use them in a sentence. The example sentences are really helpful.
- check the meaning of new wordsfind what words mean
- how to pronounce wordshow to say words
- The example sentences are really helpfulexamples help a lot
What kinds of dictionaries do you think are most useful?
For learners, I think an English-English dictionary for learners is the most useful. The definitions are written in simple English, so you learn more words while you check. Bilingual dictionaries are good for beginners, though.
- definitionsexplanations of meaning
- Bilingual dictionariesdictionaries with two languages
- for beginnersfor people just starting
Do you think dictionaries are useful for learning a language?
Yes, they're very useful, but you shouldn't check every word. If you stop for every new word, reading becomes slow and boring. It's better to guess first, and then check only the important words.

- guess firsttry to understand first
Part 2 · Cue card
Meeting someone again after a long time
You get 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1 to 2 minutes. Follow the four points on the card in order.
Candidate task card
Describe a time when you met someone again after a long time.
You should say:
- who the person was
- how and when you first met
- how long it had been since you last saw him or her
- and explain how you felt about meeting this person again
Start
I'd like to talk about meeting my childhood friend, Karim, again last year. It was a very emotional moment.
Who he was
Karim was my neighbour and best friend when I was a child. We did everything together: we went to school, played football and even got into trouble together.
How you met
We met when we were about six, because our families lived in the same building. When we were twelve, his family moved to Australia because of his father's job.
How long it had been
We hadn't seen each other for almost eighteen years. We wrote emails for a while, but then we lost touch. Last year, he found me on Instagram, and he told me he was visiting my city.
How you felt
I was a bit nervous before we met. I wasn't sure if we would still have anything in common. But as soon as I saw him at the café, I recognised his smile, and we hugged for a long time. We talked for five hours, about the old days and our lives now. I felt like a child again. We promised never to lose touch again.

Part 3 · Discussion
Keeping in touch and friendship
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
In what different ways can people keep in touch with each other?
Today, there are many ways. People can call, send text or voice messages, or make video calls. Social media is also popular, because you can see what your friends are doing. Some people still write letters or cards, but that's rare now.
- keep in touchcontinue to contact
- voice messagesshort recorded messages
- that's rare nowthat doesn't happen often now
Which way of keeping in touch is most popular with young people?
Messaging apps are definitely the most popular, like WhatsApp and Telegram. Young people send short messages, photos and voice notes all day. Many of them don't like phone calls, because they feel too formal or sudden.
- Messaging appsapps for sending messages

- too formal or suddentoo serious or unexpected
Why do some people change more than others?
I think it depends on their experiences. People who travel, move to new places or face big challenges often change more. Also, some people are more open to new ideas, while others prefer to stay the same.
- it depends on their experiencesit changes with what happened to them
- face big challengeshave to deal with difficult situations
- more open to new ideashappy to accept new ideas
At what age do people change the most? Why?
I think people change the most between eighteen and twenty-five. In those years, they leave school, go to university or start work, and maybe leave home. They make many important decisions, and they find out who they really are.
- change the mostchange more than at other times
- leave homestop living with parents
- find out who they really arediscover their true selves
How valuable are long-term friendships compared with new ones? Why?
Long-term friendships are very valuable, because old friends know your history. They knew you before you were successful, and they understand you without many words. New friendships are exciting, and they can bring new ideas, but trust takes time.
- Long-term friendshipsfriendships that last many years
- they understand you without many wordsthey know you well
- trust takes timeyou need time to trust
Do long-term relationships sometimes need effort? Why?
Yes, definitely. People get busy, move to different cities and change. If you don't make an effort to call, visit or remember birthdays, the relationship slowly becomes weaker. Good friendships need care, like a garden.
- make an efforttry hard
- slowly becomes weakergets less strong over time
- need care, like a gardena nice comparison
