Songs and singing

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

Did you enjoy singing when you were younger? Why?

Yes, I loved singing as a child. I sang in the school choir for three years. It was fun to sing with other children, and we performed at school events. My parents always came to watch.

  • we performed at school eventswe sang for an audience

How often do you sing now?

Only when I'm alone, usually in the car or in the shower! I don't have a great voice, so I don't sing in front of other people. But singing in the car makes the traffic less annoying.

Start

I'd like to talk about Shahab Hosseini. He's one of the most popular actors in my country, and he's also known internationally.

Who he is

He was born in Tehran in 1974. Before he became an actor, he worked as a radio presenter, so he has a very nice, deep voice.

What films he acts in

He usually acts in serious dramas about family and social problems. Two of his most famous films are 'A Separation' and 'The Salesman', which were both directed by Asghar Farhadi. Both films won the Oscar for best foreign film.

What you know about his life

He studied psychology at university, but he didn't finish, because acting became his passion. In 2016, he won the award for best actor at the Cannes Film Festival, which made him famous around the world.

Why he is popular

I think he's popular because his acting feels very real. When you watch him, you forget that he's acting. He can play an ordinary man, like a teacher or a husband, and make you feel his pain. He also seems humble and kind in interviews, so people like him as a person too.

  • known internationallyfamous in other countries
  • a radio presentera person who talks on the radio
  • were both directed by…passive: who made the films
  • acting became his passionpassion = something you love very much
  • his acting feels very realhis acting is natural
  • humblenot proud, modest

Part 3 · Discussion

Films and theatre

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

What are the most popular types of films in your country?

Comedies are probably the most popular, because people like to laugh and forget their problems. Family dramas are also very popular. Among young people, Hollywood action films and superhero movies are very popular.

  • forget their problemsstop thinking about difficulties
  • Family dramasserious films about families
  • superhero moviesfilms about heroes with special powers

What is the difference between watching a film at the cinema and at home?

At the cinema, the screen is huge and the sound is powerful, so you feel inside the film. It's also a social experience. At home, it's cheaper and more comfortable, and you can pause the film. But you get distracted more easily.

  • you feel inside the filmyou feel part of it
  • a social experiencesomething you do with others
  • you get distracted more easilyit's easier to lose focus

Do you think cinemas will close in the future?

I don't think they'll disappear, but there might be fewer of them. People will still want a special night out, especially for big films. Cinemas may become more like entertainment centres, with better seats, food and even games.

  • there might be fewer of themthe number may go down
  • a special night outan evening of going out for fun
  • entertainment centresplaces with many fun activities

How important is theatre in your country's history?

Theatre has a long history in my country. There's a traditional form called ta'zieh, which tells religious stories with music and costumes. In the last hundred years, modern theatre has also become important, especially in big cities.

  • has a long historyis very old
  • a traditional forman old type
  • costumesspecial clothes worn by actors

How strong is the tradition of going to the theatre today?

It's not very strong for most people. Theatre is popular with students and artists in big cities, but many people never go. Tickets can be expensive, and most small towns don't have a theatre at all.

  • It's not very strongnot many people do it
  • popular with students and artistsstudents and artists like it
  • don't have a theatre at allhave no theatre

Should theatre be run as a business or as a public service?

I think a mix is best. Some theatres can be businesses, with popular shows. But the government should also support some theatres, so that tickets are cheap and new, experimental plays can be shown. Culture shouldn't be only for rich people.

  • run as a businessmanaged to make money
  • a public servicea service for everyone, supported by the state
  • experimental playsnew, unusual shows
  • shouldn't be only for rich peopleshould be for everyone
