Part 1 · Interview
School
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
Did you go to a secondary school near where you lived? Why?
Yes, my school was only ten minutes away on foot. My parents chose it because it was close and safe. I walked there every morning with my neighbour, who was in the same class.
- ten minutes away on foota ten-minute walk
- close and safenear and secure
- in the same classin my class
What did you like about your secondary school?
I liked my friends and some great teachers. We also had a good sports field, and we played football every break time. The school organised trips to museums, which I really enjoyed.
- every break timeevery rest time between lessons
- organised tripsplanned visits
- which I really enjoyedadd your feeling
Tell me about anything you didn't like at your school.
I didn't like the long hours. We started at seven thirty and finished in the afternoon, and then we had a lot of homework. Also, some classes were boring, because we only memorised things from books.
- the long hoursthe long school day
- a lot of homeworkmuch work at home
- memorised things from bookslearned by heart
How could your school be improved?
I think it needed more practical lessons, like science experiments and computer classes. The classrooms were also too crowded, with forty students. Smaller classes would help teachers give more attention to each student.

Part 2 · Cue card
Something you don't have but would really like to own
You get 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1 to 2 minutes. Follow the four points on the card in order.
Candidate task card
Describe something you don't have now but would really like to own in the future.
You should say:
- what this thing is
- how long you have wanted to own it
- where you first saw it
- and explain why you would like to own it
Start
I'd like to talk about a small house with a garden. It's something I've wanted for a long time.
What it is
I don't mean a big, expensive house. I dream of a small, simple house, maybe at the edge of the city, with a garden where I can grow fruit trees and vegetables.
How long you've wanted it
I've wanted it since I was a teenager. Now I live in an apartment on the sixth floor, with no garden, so the wish is even stronger.
Where you first saw it
I first saw a house like this at my grandparents' place in a village. They had an old house with a big garden full of pomegranate and fig trees. I spent every summer there as a child.
Why you want it
I want it because I feel calm and happy when I'm close to nature. I'd love to drink my morning tea in the garden and eat fruit from my own trees. It would also be a great place for my future children to play. It will take many years to save enough money, but I think it's worth it.

Part 3 · Discussion
Owning things
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
What things do young people in your country most want to own? Why?
Most young people want the latest smartphone, because it's used for everything and shows status. Many also want a car, because public transport isn't always good. And some dream of owning their own apartment, but that's very hard now.
- the latest smartphonethe newest phone
- shows statusshows your position or money
- that's very hard nowvery difficult at the moment
Why do some people feel they need to own things?
Owning things can make people feel safe and successful. Some people compare themselves with friends and neighbours, so they want what others have. Advertising also tells us that new things will make us happier.
- feel safe and successfulfeel secure and that they've done well
- compare themselves with…check if they are equal to others
- want what others havewant the same things
Does owning lots of things make people happy? Why?
Not really. A new thing makes you happy for a short time, but then you get used to it, and you want something else. Research shows that experiences and relationships make people happier in the long term.
- for a short timenot for long
- you get used to itit becomes normal
- in the long termover a long period
Can TV and films make people want new possessions? Why?
Yes, definitely. In films, characters often have beautiful houses, nice cars and fashionable clothes. People see this lifestyle and want it too. Some films also include product placement, where brands pay to show their products.
- characterspeople in a film
- this lifestylethis way of living
- product placementshowing brands in films for money
Are there any benefits to society when people want new possessions?
Yes, there are some. When people buy things, companies grow and create jobs. It also encourages companies to invent better products. But if people buy too much, it's bad for the environment, so we need a balance.
- companies growbusinesses get bigger
- encourages companies to inventmakes them create new things
- we need a balancenot too much or too little
Will having lots of possessions still be a sign of success in the future?
I think it will be less important. Many young people now prefer to spend money on travel and experiences. Also, people are thinking more about the environment. In the future, success might mean having free time and a healthy life, not lots of things.
- a sign of successsomething that shows success
- it will be less importantmake a prediction
- thinking more about the environmentcaring more about nature
