Part 1 · Interview
Leisure
Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.
Do you have any hobbies or interests? What are they?
Yes, my main hobby is swimming. I go to the pool three times a week. I'm also interested in astronomy. On clear nights, I sometimes go outside the city with a small telescope to look at the stars and planets.

- astronomythe study of stars and planets

How did you become interested in swimming?
My father taught me to swim when I was six, in the sea in the north. I loved the feeling of floating in the water. Later, I joined a swimming club at school, and I've never stopped since then.

How do you usually spend your holidays?
I usually go on a short trip with my family, often to the north, near the sea. If we don't travel, I spend time with friends, go to the cinema and sleep a lot. I like to rest completely on holidays.
- go on a short triptravel for a few days
- If we don't travel, …in the other case

Is there anywhere you would particularly like to visit? Why?
Yes, I'd particularly like to visit the Maldives. I've seen photos of the clear blue water and white beaches, and it looks like paradise. As a swimmer, I'd love to go snorkelling and see the colourful fish.

Part 2 · Cue card
A river, lake or sea which you like
You get 1 minute to prepare and then speak for 1 to 2 minutes. Follow the four points on the card in order.
Candidate task card
Describe a river, lake or sea which you like.
You should say:
- what it is called
- where it is
- what the land near it is like
- and explain why you like it
Start
I'd like to talk about the Caspian Sea. It's actually the largest lake in the world, but everyone calls it a sea.
Where it is
It's in the north of my country. It's surrounded by five countries: Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.
The land near it
On the Iranian side, the land is very green. There are thick forests on the mountains, rice fields and tea gardens near the coast. The weather is humid, and it rains a lot, so everything is green all year.
Why you like it
I like it because it's connected to my best childhood memories. My family went there every summer, and I learned to swim in its water. I love walking on the beach at sunset, when the sky turns orange and pink.
Ending
The Caspian Sea also feels very peaceful, especially outside the summer season, when there are fewer people. Whenever I feel stressed, I imagine the sound of its waves. I hope it stays clean and beautiful for the next generations.
- the largest lake in the worldthe biggest lake
- It's surrounded by…it has … around it

Part 3 · Discussion
Water, leisure and the economy
Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.
What do people enjoy doing when they visit rivers, lakes or the sea? Why?
People enjoy swimming, fishing, sailing and just sitting by the water. Water makes people feel calm, and the fresh air is relaxing. Families love having picnics near rivers, and children love playing in the water.
- sitting by the watersitting next to water
- Water makes people feel calmwater relaxes people
- having picnicseating outside
What benefits do people get from water activities?
Swimming and other water sports are great exercise for the whole body, and they're easy on the joints. Being near water also reduces stress. And water activities are a good way to spend time with family and friends.
- great exercise for the whole bodyexercise all parts of the body
- easy on the jointsdon't hurt knees and other joints
- reduces stressmakes stress less
What are the advantages and disadvantages of swimming in the sea or in a pool?
The sea is beautiful and natural, and there's more space. But it can be dangerous, with waves and currents, and it can be dirty. A pool is safer and cleaner, and you can use it all year. But it's often crowded and has chemicals in the water.
- currentsstrong movements of water
- safer and cleanera comparison
- has chemicals in the waterchlorine, used for cleaning
How does water transport compare with other kinds of transport?
Ships are slow, but they can carry huge amounts of goods cheaply. That's why most international trade uses ships. For people, boats are not very practical, except for short trips or holidays. Ships can also cause pollution in the sea.
- huge amounts of goodsvery large quantities of products
- cheaplyfor little money
- not very practicalnot very useful in daily life
How important is it for a town or city to be near a river or the sea? Why?
Historically, it was very important. People needed water for drinking, farming and transport. That's why most old cities are near rivers. Today, it's still useful for trade and tourism, but technology lets cities grow in dry areas too.
- Historically, …in the past
- for drinking, farming and transporta list of uses
- lets cities grow in dry areasallows cities without water nearby
Have the number of jobs in fishing and water transport changed? Why?
I think there are fewer fishing jobs now. There are fewer fish, because of overfishing and pollution. Big modern ships also need fewer workers, because many things are automatic. But jobs in ports and logistics have grown with international trade.
- overfishingcatching too many fish
- many things are automaticmachines do them
- logisticsorganising the moving of goods
