Part 1 · Interview

Your friends

Short answers. About 20 to 30 seconds each. Answer, give a reason, add one detail.

Do you prefer to have one particular friend or a group of friends? Why?

I prefer a small group of friends. With a group, there's always someone free to meet, and everyone brings something different. But I also have one best friend I can tell everything to.

  • there's always someone free to meetsomeone is always available
  • everyone brings something differenteach person adds something
  • I can tell everything toI share all my thoughts with

What do you like doing most with your friends?

I like sitting in a café and talking for hours. We talk about everything, from work problems to silly stories. We also enjoy cooking together at someone's home and playing board games.

  • talking for hourstalking a long time
  • from work problems to silly storiesfrom serious to funny topics
  • playing board gamesgames like chess on a table

Is it important to keep in contact with friends you knew as a child? Why?

I think it's nice, but not always possible. Childhood friends know where you come from, and they remember who you were. That's special. But people change, and sometimes you don't have much in common anymore.

  • know where you come fromknow your background
  • they remember who you werethey knew you before
  • you don't have much in common anymoreyou don't share many interests now

What makes a friend into a good friend?

Time and difficult moments. When someone stays with you during a hard time, like an illness or a problem at work, they become a good friend. Trust and honesty also grow slowly, over years.

Start

I'd like to talk about a choice I made after university. It was one of the most difficult decisions of my life.

When

It was about four years ago, just after I graduated with a degree in computer science.

What you had to choose between

I had two job offers. One was from a big, famous company in the capital, with a high salary. The other was from a small start-up in my hometown, with a lower salary, but more interesting work and the chance to learn many skills.

Did you make a good choice

I chose the small start-up. At first, I wasn't sure, and my parents thought it was a mistake. But I think it was a good choice. I learned much more than my friends who joined big companies, because I did many different tasks. Two years later, I became the team leader.

How you felt

While I was deciding, I felt very stressed. I couldn't sleep well for a week. I made a list of advantages and disadvantages, and I talked to my old teacher. In the end, I followed my heart. When I finally decided, I felt a big relief.

  • one of the most difficult decisions of my lifea strong opening
  • two job offerstwo companies wanted to hire me
  • a small start-upa new, small company
  • it was a mistakeit was the wrong decision
  • I followed my heartI did what I really wanted
  • I felt a big reliefI felt free from worry

Part 3 · Discussion

Choices

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

What typical choices do people make at different stages of their lives?

Teenagers choose what to study. In their twenties, people choose a job and maybe a partner. Later, they decide where to live, whether to buy a house and whether to have children. Older people choose when to retire and how to spend their free time.

  • at different stages of their livesat different times of life
  • In their twenties, …aged 20 to 29
  • when to retirewhen to stop working

Should important choices be made by parents rather than young adults?

No, I don't think so. Young adults should make their own choices, because they have to live with the results. But parents have more experience, so it's wise to listen to their advice. The final decision should be the young person's.

  • rather thaninstead of
  • live with the resultsaccept what happens after
  • it's wise to…it's sensible to
  • The final decisionthe last choice

Why do some people like to discuss their choices with others?

Other people can see things we miss. When we're stressed, we don't always think clearly. Talking also helps us organise our thoughts. And sharing a decision makes us feel less alone with it.

  • see things we missnotice what we don't see
  • think clearlythink in a logical way
  • organise our thoughtsmake our ideas clear

What kinds of choices do people make in everyday life?

We make many small choices every day: what to wear, what to eat, how to travel to work and how to spend our free time. Some studies say we make thousands of small decisions every day, often without thinking.

  • many small choices every daya lot of little decisions
  • thousands of small decisionsvery many decisions
  • often without thinkingautomatically

Why do some people choose to do the same things every day? Are there disadvantages?

A routine makes life easier, because you don't need to think about everything. It saves time and energy. But the disadvantage is that life can become boring, and you may miss new experiences and opportunities.

  • A routine makes life easiera fixed plan helps
  • saves time and energyuses less time and effort
  • miss new experiencesnot have new experiences

Do people today have more choices to make than in the past?

Yes, many more. In the past, people often did the same job as their parents and married someone from the same village. Today, we can choose from thousands of jobs, places to live and products. This is good, but too many choices can also be stressful.

  • Yes, many more.a strong yes
  • did the same job as their parentshad their parents' job
  • too many choices can also be stressfulhaving many options can cause worry
