What games are popular in your country? Why?

Card games are very popular, especially one called Hokm. Families play it at parties and on long winter nights. It's popular because it's easy to learn, and you play in teams, so there's a lot of talking and laughing.

Start

I'd like to talk about a night market I visited in Bangkok, Thailand, two years ago. It was one of the most colourful places I've ever been.

Where it is

It's in the centre of Bangkok, in a big open area near a metro station. It only opens in the evening, from about five until midnight, when the weather is cooler.

What it sells

It sells almost everything: clothes, bags, handmade jewellery and souvenirs. But the best part is the food. There are dozens of stalls selling noodles, grilled meat, fresh fruit juices and strange snacks, like fried insects.

How big it is

It's huge. There are hundreds of stalls in long rows, and it took us more than three hours to walk around. Thousands of people visit every night, both tourists and locals.

Why you enjoyed it

I enjoyed it because it was full of energy. There was music, bright lights and wonderful smells everywhere. I tried mango sticky rice for the first time, and it was delicious. I also practised my bargaining skills and bought a few gifts for my family at good prices. It felt like a festival, not just a market.

Part 3 · Discussion

Markets and shops

Longer answers. About 30 to 45 seconds. Give your opinion, explain why, and give an example.

Do people in your country enjoy going to open-air markets? Which type is most popular?

Yes, especially weekly markets that sell fruit and vegetables, because the prices are lower than in supermarkets. In some cities, there are also Friday markets for second-hand and antique things, which are popular with collectors.

  • weekly marketsmarkets that happen once a week
  • antique thingsvery old valuable objects
  • collectorspeople who collect special items

Are markets more suitable for selling certain types of things? Why?

Yes. Fresh food is perfect for markets, because farmers can sell directly to customers. Handmade crafts and second-hand items are also good, because people like to look, touch and bargain. Expensive electronics are better in shops, where you get a guarantee.

  • sell directly to customerssell without a middle person
  • look, touch and bargaincheck and discuss the price
  • a guaranteea promise to repair or replace

Do young people feel the same about markets as older people? Why?

Not exactly. Older people often go to markets for daily shopping, because they trust the fresh food. Young people visit markets more for fun or to find unusual things, like vintage clothes. For daily shopping, they prefer online shops.

  • for daily shoppingfor normal everyday buying
  • unusual thingsthings that are not common
  • vintage clothesold clothes that are stylish

What are the advantages of buying from shops rather than markets?

Shops are more reliable. Prices are fixed, so you don't have to bargain. You can usually return products if there's a problem. Shops are also open every day and have air conditioning, which matters in hot weather.

  • more reliableyou can trust them more
  • Prices are fixedprices don't change
  • return productsgive products back

How does advertising influence what people buy? Is this true for everyone?

Advertising makes us notice products and believe we need them. It works best on children and young people, who are more easily influenced. Some people are more careful and compare products before buying, but nobody is completely free from advertising.

  • makes us notice productsmakes us see them
  • more easily influencedchange their minds more easily
  • compare products before buyingcheck differences first

Have recent changes in the way people live affected shopping habits? Why?

Yes. People are busier, so online shopping and home delivery have grown a lot. Many people now buy groceries with an app. Also, prices have gone up, so people compare prices more carefully and buy more second-hand things.

  • groceriesfood and things for the house
